Visit / JAMEEL ARTS CENTRE
I recently spent the day in Dubai - partly to meet a potential Client, and partly to take photographs of a couple of places I have not got round to visiting in my 8+ years in the UAE. The first of these was the James Arts Centre. Designed by Serie Architects, the Centre is “an independent institution dedicated to exhibiting contemporary art to the public and engaging communities through learning, research and commissions. Founded and supported by Art Jameel, the Centre is located in Jaddaf Waterfront, Dubai, United Arab Emirates.”
In the architects own words: “The Jameel Arts Centre is an exhibition space, artist residence, and creative enterprise incubator overlooking Dubai Creek. Conceived as a family of forms bounded by a colonnade, its massing and spatiality draws from the rich architectural tradition of the region. The colonnade is an active social space, framing gardens and enlivening the waterfront promenade. Courtyards are galleries of nature, places for gardens and sculpture. And they are spaces of repose between galleries. The Centre’s design fragments the courtyard, continually layering a relationship between inside and outside, art and nature.”
Now 5 years old, the design and project execution really has stood the test of time.
